Jonathan Is Not A Drunkard - Reuben Abati

Former Spokesperson to former President Goodluck Jonathan, Reuben Abati, in a recent interview with Rockcity 101.9 FM, says contrary to what many people believe that Jonathan is a drunkard. He said for all the years he worked as Special Adviser on Media and Publicity to the former president, he only saw him drink wine during government functions.

"President Jonathan does not drink. You see, that’s one of the myths about that administration and you must understand how this thing is, it’s all about perception, communication, it’s all about what goes out and it’s about stereotyping. People just stereotype people from a particular part of the country as drunkards, and they look for justification for one type of behaviour or the other.
But I can tell you that in my 4 years of working for President Jonathan, I never found him in a bibulous situation. If he ever tasted any drink, maybe a glass of wine during special occasions.
All those stories about him drinking, about President Jonathan always being berated, about bibulous situations inside the Villa, those things did not exist. The people must find justifications to say this is why we think this situation is this way it is. I tell you and Nigerians will remember that he is a very humble man; he is a very committed person to the Nigerian project. If you look at the results of the elections, you’ll see that he lost the elections with about 2.5 million votes or thereabout, which means that a large number of Nigerians still believed in him and also believed in his ability and his capability of his administration to move Nigeria forward. We were dealing with a democracy; the people have a right to make a choice, when the people make a choice, we respect that choice.
And our commitment as Nigerians, whoever we may be, whatever maybe our station, is to remain committed to Nigeria, and to support whoever has emerged and to respect the choice and the decision of Nigerians. This is not about witch-hunt, it’s not about criticising people, the Nigerian people have spoken and we stand by the decision of the Nigerian people. And we all support whoever is there to move Nigeria forward.
So this backward looking, can we just look forward? Can we all just work together to move Nigeria forward? For me, that is where the emphasis should be, because we are all Nigerians and at the end of the day the country is more important than all of us" he said.

President Buhari Has No Alternative - Olusegun Obasanjo

Nigeria’s former president, Olusegun Obasanjo, while hosting the leadership of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) at his residence in Abeokuta, said that all hands must be on deck in giving adequate support to provide the ‘change’ Nigeria desired. The ex- president said further that the leadership of President Muhammadu Buhari has no alternative and that is the reason all Nigerians must support his administration to succeed.

“God forbid that this present democratic dispensation should fail, because we have no other alternative and that is why I said that the present administration should succeed. There is no excuse and that is why I am so concern about the success of this administration. Say whatever you like about me, I pray and I will work for the success of this government.”
“There is no alternative to democracy, the alternative to democracy is even worse than the imperfection of democracy. I am a victim of military regime, I was put in jail meant to be killed by divine intervention I escaped. If there was democracy there might been fair amount of trial. So I heard you, I note your request and has time goes by when I do have opportunity in the community of leaders where you want me to pass your message, I will deliver your message. “

“There is no individual who is sine qua non. There is no angel, for me there is no messiah except Jesus Christ, but there are leaders who are concerned about what is happening in this country, leaders that are so passionate about this country and who are ready to stick out their neck for this country and God has given us such an individual as the president of the country.

“What has happened is an indication that change has come and that our dreams may come true. But all that is required of everyone, young and old, youths and even students is to give unalloyed support to the government and where we believe that we should give criticism that is objective and positive we should give.

“For me these points that you have made about what is going on in this country, about corruption, about the economy, about security, we all know these and that is why some of us prepared to stick out our neck to achieve change because most of these things have not been addressed for the past six years how can anybody tell us that they will be addressed the next four years?

“But now we have seen a ray of hope, so i will say let us encourage where we need to encourage, let us be objective where we need to be objective, let us show solidarity where we need to show solidarity.

“Nobody is too young or too old to give meaningful contribution, even what you are doing here is part of it, but do not limit it here, let us take it to them, those at the Senate, House of Representatives, those at the State level men and women of goodwill in this country,” he said.

Obasanjo also spoke on youth employment, which to him has always been a serious concern.

“There is no employment for the youths in this country. We have 150 universities, somebody told me that we can admit about 7000 students in a year but those who seek admission into the university probably double that number but whatever it is if we admit 7000 students into the universities every year we are creating half a million jobs we are not even creating a quarter of a million jobs and that for me is where the problem lies.”

“We need to be mindful of job creation and wealth creation, it does not matter what university you went to, you must be mindful that job creation and wealth creation to the next generation.
“If you don’t have a target about the actions that you are about to take then you do not have anything to work up to. I believe that having a target is necessary and even if you can not meet that target your people have something to work up to and if a target is set that is the way we do in the military.

“Let me give the history of the Nigeria civil war, I was one of those who did the appreciation of the war and wrote the order we thought that war would end in six months and we make a plan for six months, but the war took 30 months but you can not just leave it open, it must be an open ended, now fix a target and then those who are to carry it out they know that they have time and space within which to work.”

The Abobaku To Be Buried With Late Ooni Of Ife On The Run

The report reaching us now indicate that "The Abobaku" The one who dies with the king has ran away from the palace. For those hearing this for the first time, Abobaku is the person that is appointed to serve a king during his lifetime and they (Abobaku) are to be buried with the king when he eventually dies.

Abobaku are like the second- in-command to the King as they live like king themselves, The position gives them respect and other numerous benefits in the town. When the Ooni was crowned in 1980, the kingmakers selected someone known as abobaku. His primary role is to live the rest of his life with the king, enjoying everything the king enjoys, live unrestricted life, he can even upturn any decision made by the king if he choose to do so. He is the defacto ooni whenever the king is indisposed. He was made to realize that he can lay his hand on anything he likes in the kingdom as long as the king lives. He was also told that all these enjoyment ends when the king dies because he must die with the king.

Now, The Abobaku has enjoyed all these for 35 years and it seem like he is not ready to die with the king. Probably this and other reasons might have caused him to flee.

Senate Set To Probe Power Sector Under Obasanjo, Jonathan

The Nigerian Senate yesterday, Thursday 13th, set up a 13-Member Ad-Hoc Committee to thoroughly investigate the management of funds appropriated for the power sector since 1999. The Committee, headed by Senator Abubakar Kyari, was also given the task of probing the defunct Power Holding Company of Nigeria by the Federal Government.

The Upper Chamber took the decision while passing a motion sponsored by the Senate Leader, Ali Ndume, seeking the immediate reconnection of some parts of Borno State back to the national grid in view of the challenges the blackout was posing to his constituents.

The Senate urged the Federal Government to complete the Mambilla Power Project with the aim of improving electricity supply in the country. It also called on President Muhammadu Buhari to direct the Transmission Company of Nigeria to immediately reconnect Maiduguri to the national grid. It directed the committee to conclude its investigations and report to the Senate within 2 weeks.

The senators, while contributing to the debate, also condemned the inability of the TCN to provide uninterrupted power supply to all parts of the country.

Ndume expressed concern that Nigeria, with a population of over 150 million, only produced  4,600 megawatts, while South Africa with a population of about 40 million people produced 40,000 megawatts. He observed that the disconnection of Maiduguri , the Borno State capital, from the national grid, as well as the degeneration of power supply across the country had affected the economy negatively.

He also said that with an installed power generation potential of about 5,000 megawatts, the output distributed currently was about 1,950 megawatts and that it was disheartening to note that Iran with over 77 million people “generates about 42,000 megawatts, while South Korea with over 49 million people generates about 60,000 megawatts of electricity.” Ndume, who said that Maiduguri and its environs had been completely disconnected since the emergence of insurgency, complained that the situation had grounded economic activities in the state.

He said:

“I buy diesel to run my generator and that costs me N10, 000 per day. No country can be said to be near development when there is no power. “This Senate needs to investigate this to give the government support. For some years now, a lot of money has been spent but there is nothing to show for it.”

Another Senator,  Godswill Akpabio, lamented that many companies had shut down operation due to irregular power supply in the country. He lamented that in spite of the financial contribution by some states in the South to improve power supply, Nigerians were still grappling with lack of electricity supply.

He said,
“In 2015, we are celebrating 4,000 megawatts, for me this is worrisome. We cannot have employment without power and Nigerians are complaining about the high cost and some localities which have not seen light for months are asked to pay high tariff.”
The Senate President, Bukola Saraki, noted that the inadequate power supply in the country was a cause for concern, saying it had affected the economic growth of the nation. He said that the lack of power supply had plunged the country into further hardship.

He said, “We thought that with the Power Reform Act and the unbundling of the Power Holding Company of Nigeria, we will begin to see improvement with regard to power supply; unfortunately, it is not so. “The Ad Hoc Committee that we set up should look at the activities of the Discos and what is preventing Nigerians from benefitting from the unbundling of the PHCN.”
